  1. Important information before you start ImgFun:
  2.  
  3. [1]  For all users, especially disk vendors:
  4.  
  5.     If users want to  distribute imgfun,  please   do  distribute  the
  6. whole package  and  read  the  files  imgfun.txt  and    register.txt.
  7. The following descriptions are suggested  for  disk   catalogs  or BBS
  8. file info:
  9.

  30. [2] system requirements
  31.  
  32.   1. imgfun.exe and imgfun.hlp together in a directory
  33.   2. at least a VGA and 300K free under DOS, 512k recommended
  34.   3. at least 1 MB  free  hard disk space, for image processing, 2MB
  35.      recommended
  36.  
  37.    For viewing images only, a hard disk is not necessary.
  38.    A disk caching program like smartdrv is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
  39.  
  40.     For users with a  486 computer, it  is  not  recommended  to spend
  41. your money for a JPEG compression  card for the speed of imgfun in the
  42. JPEG part.  This should save you at  least  several  hundred  dollars.
  43. The  current version  is compiled  by  a 16  bit compiler.  A 32   bit
  44. compiler  will  speed  up   the program at  least  50%. A new  version
  45. compiled by 32 bit compiler might be  available in  1993  for 386SX or
  46. above  computers.   For   a   640x480x256  color  gif  compressed   by
  47. ImgFun ,the pure  JPEG decompression  part   takes around  7  seconds,
  48. and the  mapping to the palette takes about  6 to 8 seconds on a 486DX
  49. 33MHz system.

  51.     For   most  compressed files by  ImgFun, users should  be able  to
  52. view the images on  the screen within  15 seconds without  decoding to
  53. disk files on a 486DX 33MHz system.

  56. [3]. start the program in the following two ways:
  57.  
  58. 1. Test of the auto-detection mode.
  59.  
  60.     Type "imgfun"  to start the  program in the  auto  detection mode,
  61. then  please use the function, Option, Directory, image, to  set   the
  62. source image directory,  i.e., where your  image files are.   Then use
  63. the File,  View  function to view  your  images.  If everything  works
  64. fine, then just enjoy the package!!!
  65.  
  66.     If  you  start imgfun,   but  find  only  320x200  mode available.
  67. Then please  install a VESA  driver, then restart   imgfun  to see  if
  68. you can get SVGA modes working.
  69.  
  70. NOT ALL VESA  DRIVERS ARE  VALID, YOU MIGHT END UP  WITH 320x200  ONLY
  71. AGAIN, OR PROBLEMS WITH INCOMPATIBLE VESA DRIVERS!!!

  73. 2. Start the program with the standard mode only
  74.  
  75.     If  you have problems  in   the auto  detection   mode, then type:
  76. "imgfun -s" to start the program with the 320x200 mode only.
  77.  
  78.     The  program  will be  able  to  run   on any  VGA  system without
  79. problems.  But  only  the standard  320x200  mode  available.  You can
  80. use  the function, Option,  Display,  card, auto for auto-detection of
  81. your card or choose the SVGA  drivers  manually only when you are sure
  82. about the chip used in your SVGA card.
  83.  
  84.     My suggestion is that try  the auto detection  at your first time.
  85. If  anything wrong, then live with the 320x200   mode,  or  get a SVGA
  86. card for around $50, for example, Trident 8900  with 512KB  on  board.
  87. A VGA card that  can  not display 640x400x256 mode is out of date  and
  88. waste your investment on the VGA monitor.

  91.     When  setting the Display,  mode,  please   make  sure   you  have
  92. enough memory  on your  VGA  board, otherwise  the  program  might not
  93. function properly, AND  YOUR  MONITOR  CAN  STAND  THE  RESOLUTION YOU
  94. CHOOSE, OTHERWISE YOU  MIGHT BURN YOUR MONITOR'S TUBE!!! REMEMBER THIS
  95. ALL THE TIME!!!

  97.     After you clear  the first hurdle of testing your SVGA,  then  you
  98. can start to play with the program.

  100. [4]. On line help system
  101.  
  102.     The help system is  activated by  pressing  F1  in the menu  mode.
  103. Press the space bar  for  the  topic  selection  list. Type in  or use
  104. arrow keys to scroll for the topic  you want, and then press Enter for
  105. the topic.
  106.  
  107.     For all   list selections, ImgFun will match  the topic name  with
  108. the keystrokes  as you  type in, usually two  or three keystrokes will
  109. be enough.  For example, to select  a format from a list of  GIF, PCX,
  110. BMP, JPEG.  To  select BMP,  then just type  'B', if  you change  your
  111. mind, and want  to   select GIF, then   just type  'GG'.  ImgFun  will
  112. notice  this change  and   switch to the  GIF  format. The  first  'G'
  113. which  is not a following letter, 'M' of 'BMP'makes ImgFun to  rematch
  114. from  subsequent  letters  and  abandon  the current  selection.   The
  115. second  'G'  let  ImgFun  jump  to  the   GIF  selection for   closest
  116. matching.  It  will be  better for  users  to   try  on this   feature
  117. several times  for learning  fast selection through  out  the package.
  118. This is especially  useful when locating a  particular file in  a long
  119. file list.

  121. [5]. For the viewer
  122.  
  123.     There  are   two   ways  to  view  images.  First  use  the  File,
  124. VIEW function.  This  function  dumps  output  to  the screen directly
  125. like other  image  viewers.   This  function  is always available even
  126. after you loaded two images.

  128.     Another powerful viewer is available   AFTER YOU LOADED THE IMAGE,
  129. by the function File, LOAD. Then try the following keystrokes:
  130.  
  131.   Press F5: then the image will be displayed in the screen.
  132.   Press Page Up several times to zoom in. Press Page Down to zoom out.
  133.   Press: Left, Right, Up, Down keys to scroll.
  134.  
  135.     So far,  I  have not seen any   package can do  this software zoom
  136. as fast as ImgFun. Enjoy your images, especially gifs.!!!

  138.     A  manual  slide  show   is   implemented   in  the Utility, Slide
  139. show function.  Read the  help file for its usage. The slide show part
  140. will be much more powerful in future versions of ImgFun.

  143. [7]. Transparent Disk compression systems (Stacker for example) :
  144.  
  145.     If you use  Stacker  or  other  disk compression programs on  your
  146. hard disk, there's no need for lossless  compression of your files  by
  147. LHA, LZEXE, or PKZIP, and etc. programs.
  148.  
  149. BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR JPEG LOSSY COMPRESSION!!!!
  150.  
  151. YOU CAN GAIN DISK SPACE EVEN ON A TRANSPARENT  DISK COMPRESSION SYSTEM
  152. BY COMPRESSING YOUR IMAGES USING THE IMGFUN PACKAGE!!!

  154. [8]. the undo(F2) and update(F4) mechanism
  155.  
  156.     You  can undo all changes made to the  loaded image 1 by  pressing
  157. F2.   The undo function  will remove all  the  changes since the  last
  158. time you update  the image. After  some processings on the  image, you
  159. must press, F4, (update) to make the changes permanent. The update and
  160. undo  should  work as  a   pair.   This  makes  it  possible   for  an
  161. unlimited step undo without more  memory than a one step undo. If  you
  162. prefer one step undo like   other packages, just   press  F4:update to
  163. accept  the change you just made,  or F2:undo to  undo the change  you
  164. just did on  the image after every step of processings.

  172.     I have a  lot  ideas   for  playing with  images. But  I  do  need
  173. your registration to finance  me  to  develop these ideas into ImgFun.
  174. Right now I am working on  a  lossless compression of 256 color  gifs.

  187. of this package,  and  LZEXE is  used   in imgfun.exe  to   reduce the
